Aimee Mann – Freeway

I’ve been in love with Aimee Mann’s music ever since I first heard her perform “Humpty Dumpty” on Norgwegian television. Since then I’ve bought almost all her albums; Bachelor No. 2 (2000) being my definitive favourite.

What I like about Mann’s songs is the simplicity of it, not to say that her songs are simple. They are far from it. However her songs range from catchy pop tunes to songs that are rather hard to get into, still that is what we love about Aimee. I like the contrast in the simple melodies and the often somewhat sad and complex lyrics. Mann is an artist for those who enjoy good lyrics; lyrics that are telling stories.

Mann is well into her forties now, actually she will be turning 48 this September. Her career as an artist started with the punk band The Young Snakes in the early eighties. During the 90’s she slowly established a career as a singer-songwriter.

The seventh studio album by Mann, @#%&*! Smilers, was released yesterday (June 3). The first trakk, “Freeway”, is the first single out.
